Best Stay Home Jobs, Small Home Business Ideas for Moms and Dads

You need money yesterday, but you also seek a way you can make it that will work around the rest of your life’s schedule. And that’s how some of the best stay home jobs for 2018 can help you.

What are they and what can they offer you?

But you barely have time to research them. And that’s where I come in.

Ideally you would like to do this home based business thing full-time.

And if you have a way to do it then great! But if not then you would like to find something part-time that can start making money now and that could become full-time later.

Some of these items on the list qualify as stay home jobs while others are small home-based businesses.

My blog is an example of a small home-based business.

And no, I did not include any multi-level marketing business opportunities here.

All the money-making ideas here are legitimate ways to make money to help you save, pay off debt or even invest.

Before I go any further, you may want to check out my post regarding how to save money without making any extra.

So don’t waste your money on these items so you can finally save and repair and rebuild your personal finances.

Some of the links on this page are affiliate links that earn me a commission if you click them and make a purchase or subscribe. This does NOT affect the price of your purchase. I only recommend products or services I believe are relevant to the topic of this page, will help you or I have tried them myself. Make your decisions on your needs NOT mine. However, if you do decide to purchase through my links I’d be grateful.

Stay Home Jobs vs Small Home Business Ideas

I just want to make this clear.

You can define these however you’d like, but I will note one major difference.

I feel you must know this difference to help you make a better decision now.

If not, you could lose valuable time and regret that you didn’t do it the other way.

Stay Home Jobs

With stay home jobs you do not own anything.

Instead you perform a task, or project, and get paid.

With a job you do not make passive income, money that continues to flow in automatically.

In this case, you make the money one time and then start over.

But a job pays faster because you do not have to build anything and wait to reap your rewards later.

Small Home Based Businesses

However, with home-based businesses, you must build some kind of system first then wait for things to lift off before making any money.

So in the short turn you cannot expect much money-making to happen.

At the same time, with small home based businesses you set yourself up for easy money to made on auto-pilot later.

Making Money on Auto-pilot = Passive Income

And for small businesses it will take some kind of investment of money to get things started and perhaps on-going expenses.

I won’t get into the accounting side, but I will say this.

The goal for a small home business that is set up to make passive income is to make more money than you spend.

Duh, right?

But the tools, marketing, etc., that you spend money on will set you up to grow your business exponentially.

And with these small home business ideas, that’s what you want- passive income that increases as time passes.

My blog here, is an example of an ever-increasing, passive income generating small business.

Online, Offline Ways to Make Money with Stay Home Jobs and Businesses

To help you digest the information more easily I decided to mix stay home jobs and the small home business ideas together, but under two categories.

While I fully endorse online money making, due to it’s passive income capabilities, offline money making has it’s merits too.

But you must choose what method works best for your schedule, situation and goals.

Maybe you don’t have time to wait to make money?

Perhaps you just need some extra money on the side to pay for something that you are saving up for?

Then in this case you want something temporary, not long-term.

But if you are anything like me, then you want something that can help you make the most money possible and allow you to leave the corporate world behind.

What are your goals?

Let’s start with the money making ideas that do not require any technical skills.

Offline Stay Home Jobs and Small Home-Based Businesses

The key is to find what works best for your current circumstances.

In this list I provide a mix of stay home jobs and small home business ideas that range from reselling or renting out products or providing a service.

Each solves a problem or creates a convenience for the end user.

I wouldn’t classify any of these as a form of passive income.

So if you want to make money now, then these are worthy of your attention.

Of course, there are many more ideas out there than just this list.

And I invite you to share any if you have them in the comments field at the bottom of this post.

Rent Out Baby Gear

Rent out carriages, strollers, high chairs to parents or grandparents visiting other family members or going on vacation. Baby gear rentals provide the convenience of not having to drag your own from home or repurchase it. Also provide pick up and delivery service of the equipment.

Rent Out Other Things (Tools, Bike, Leaf Blower)

Imagine renting out some of your possessions that lay around the house and making money on them over and over. You can.  And there are sites that can help you list those items such as the following:

Vending Machines

This one I still do. I guess you cannot look at running vending machines on a list of stay home jobs, nor a job at all, but I’ve personally owned and operated my own vending machines myself for years. This business helped get me out of debt and save me money.

In fact, before writing this post I went out for an hour to fill a vending machine and picked up a few hundred dollars.

I’ve had machines that make me $500+ per month, that’s easy money.

They come in all kinds, but the simplest and most dependable more making consistent money are either snack, soda or candy machines. I’ve placed snack and soda machines in break rooms of clothing stores and in hotels, but you can choose from multiple kinds of businesses.

Some places will ask you for a commission. Only do it if you will make more than enough money to pay it back, but you can find locations all over town that do not ask for a commission or fee.

Don’t buy your machines new, they’re too expensive and unnecessary. In the end the customers only care about the quality of the products you place in the machine. Instead purchase used ones.

Here’s a thorough article on running a small vending machine route.

Assemble Toys and Crafts for Big Companies

Some of the best stay home jobs for moms turn to big companies that provide formal arrangements to help them assemble their products such as toys, crafts, woodwork or even stuffing envelopes or mailing circulars. The companies send you the products with assembly instructions, you put them together and then send them back.

Deliver Groceries

Deliver on-demand groceries to people who may temporarily not be able to drive or maintain busy schedules and cannot get to the store. For this idea you will have to leave the house too, so it’s not exactly a stay home job, but you gain the benefit of a flexible schedule.

-Check out more information to make up to $25 per hour and set your own schedule at these two sites:

Pet Sit/Dog Sit

Join a network of fellow dog lovers who get paid to pet sit and walk dogs. Join DogVacay and they connect you to clients who need dog sitters last second or on a regular basis. Also not exactly as classified as one of the true stay home jobs, but you don’t have to clock in and clock out and you make best friends with dogs and cats who will love you unconditionally and get paid for it. 🙂

Test New Products at CashCrate.com

This is one of the more unique stay home jobs that earns you extra cash for testing out products and providing feedback.

Rent Out a Room to Live In

Sometimes renting out one room of your home benefits you more than renting out your entire home.

Rent Out Room to Visitors

Millions of people across the globe are taking advantage of the high costs of hotel rooms and renting out their rooms for tourists and visitors. You’ve of course heard of AirBnB, but have you taken a serious look at it.

Run Errands

Make easy money on the side running errands for people around town.

TaskRabbit is an online and mobile marketplace that matches freelance labor with local demand, allowing consumers to find immediate help with everyday tasks, including cleaning, moving, delivery and handyman work.

Resell Brand-Name Used Clothes

Sell your second-hand, brand-name clothing to other consumers through ThredUp.

Online Stay Home Jobs and Small Home-Based Businesses

If you are looking for a way to create on-going income that can supplement your full-time job and possibly become a full-time source of money then this next list is for you. Consequently, this is the most exciting part of this post for me.

These completely qualify as stay home jobs and are some of the BEST stay home jobs of 2018, or any year.

These are some of the best stay home jobs for 2018 I can suggest. Although, I’d classify many of them as business than jobs.

My blog is an online business that generates passive income and in the future I will expand my services.  I plan to offer coaching services to teach other bloggers how to turn their site into a money-generating machine.  Or to instruct new bloggers how to set up a blog the right way from the beginning so they can earn money.

Write Online eBook Reviews

This is a major source of income for me. People often turn to reviews before making their final purchase. If you have a blog, then you can publish reviews of eBooks related to the topic of your choice. When your visitors click through the link on your reviews and make a purchase you make a commission that automatically gets sent to your Paypal account or bank account.

If you are interested to learn more about this then read my post about How Beginning Bloggers Can $100-$500 Per Month (on autopilot). The discussion of how to make money from reviews appears in one of the sections of my lengthy and comprehensive post.

Email Marketing: Suggest Favorite Products

Serious bloggers create newsletters, which are simple emails, to send to people who subscribe to them. We send out periodic emails (once every few days, a few times a month, etc.) with helpful tips related to the topics of our blog. In my case, I suggest tips how to overcome an affair and even how to find true love (mostly targeted to women who wish to understand men better).

Within these emails we send suggestions to third party vendors, who offer eBooks, coaching services, how-to videos, etc, of which we believe will aid our visitors in solving their inherent challenges they face.

You can even send your subscribers to your review pages on your blog, which will inform them in detail about the product to help them decide if the product is right for them.

Again, if you would like to learn more details about how to make money as a blogger with an email newsletter then start with this post that contains a section about how to make money in affiliate marketing as a newbie blogger.

Top Ten Lists

And yet here is another fun way to promote products online to earn a commission that we bloggers regularly employ on our sites. You’ve seen them a zillion times on websites over the years. Commonly referred to “list posts” in the blogging world, lists of favorite tips, products, techniques, reasons to explain a problem, etc are perhaps the most read posts of all kinds.

For example, I have a post with top flirty texts to hook a guy. Currently, it’s my most viewed post, thanks to my expertise with Pinterest. With this post I can make money three ways: 1) Ads, 2) links to recommended eBooks, 3) Newsletter Sign Ups. With the newsletter sign ups, eventually the subscriber will read an email with a link to a recommended eBook.

Online Surveys at CashCrate.com

Here’s a super popular way to make money online and get paid per survey, control your own schedule and complete the surveys on your own time. CashCrate will notify you via email of surveys you can do or you can simply sign into their site after becoming a member and search for available surveys to conduct.

Thousands of big companies need feedback regarding their potential customers and are willing to pay you to help in exchange for your opinions.

Online Tutoring

I love teaching. I’ve taught English overseas and I know some people who have tutored online. Most parents have tutored either for their own kids, relatives or neighbors.

Why not get paid to do it with more than enough jobs postings to choose from? I personally have not done it because my choice to make money online is through my blog.

One of the most notorious ones I’ve seen is Tutor.com. Most of the reviews I read from the people who worked for them liked the flexible schedule, but it’s tough to get promoted into full-time. The company cannot afford to pay out benefits to too many people.

Also you must follow strict guidelines for how you tutor. For example, if a student struggles to find the answer you cannot just tell them it. As a result some students get frustrated and give up and instead of taking ownership for their own progress can blame the tutor.

If you’d like to teach online, on your own schedule and have a chance to work up to 28 hours as a part-time tutor then this might be a great choice for you.

Online Writing Jobs

I run a blog, so needless to say, I like to write. Many bloggers like myself turn to websites like Upwork.com or Fiverr.com to pay for writers to create blog posts for us. It’s very time consuming to create all of our own content so it makes sense to hire someone to do it for you.

You can even write cover letters, resumes, articles for online magazines, research papers for college professors, create menus, logos and a long list too big to add here.

And there’s where you come in. You can upload a profile to land writing projects. Of course, how much you earn depends on the projects you land and the experience you gain over time. But it’s fairly common to earn $20+ per project and in some cases $50+, minus the Upwork and Fiverr‘s fees.

But the trick is to get your profile seen and learn how to compete for projects, but when you get them you have a pretty dependable source of income to rely on.

You can also bid on projects, if you do not want to wait for someone to reach out to you.

  • Or if you would like to bid for writing projects and receive the full payment on every project you can check out Writing-Jobs.net.

Writing-Jobs.net is not free. So in exchange for no fees, you’d invest in a $27 monthly membership with access to a list of writing jobs to bid on. To make this worth your while you’d have to get at least a few projects to pay back your monthly investment. I don’t like the idea of paying monthly, but it would be a lot less work than a creating a profile and waiting for people to find you.

Uber Eats

Here’s another way to work for Uber that is less intrusive than having a stranger come into your car. I know two people who do this regularly. Whenever they feel like making some extra money they just enter the app and wait for Uber to send them a route.

It’s not in every city, but in most mid to major US cities and it’s easy to sign up and use.

There are peak times to get higher paying routes (typically nights, especially weekends), but you work when you want.

You got free time right now? You could literally sign up and start driving within the hour.

I feel like this would be safer than taxiing people around, but you still could end up in any area of town safe or not that safe.

Virtual Assistant

One of the most trendy and popular stay home jobs to make money, but with a few restrictions. You can work assist literally any kind of professional like real estate agents, lawyers, life coaches, bloggers, insurance agents, professors, small business owner, etc.

Your responsibilities could range from data entry, to responding to emails, to make calls, answering phone calls, market research, creating ads, organizing meeting schedule and travel arrangements, etc.

I worked for a real estate agent who hired a virtual assistant and was more than pleased, she was considered part of our team even though she lived on the other side of the world.

My other experience working with a virtual assistant is a blogger. One of the relationship coaches whom I promote his products for hires a virtual assistant who responds to my emails. My experience with her is phenomenal. I get quick responses and thorough answers.

You could make good money doing this, in fact, full-time work, but again it comes with some restriction.

Depending on the job, you may have to log in and work a schedule. You have the flexibility and luxury of working at home, but your boss will keep track of your hours based on your log in times.

The virtual assistants I have come in contact with have raved about how much they enjoy it, especially since they can take care of their kids from home.

Another downside is that you may not find a great full-time job, instead you may have to work several, BUT no bidding. It’s guaranteed work.

And you will have to apply. So there’s no guarantee you will be accepted.

Here are some of the highest rated, highest paying virtual assistant websites:

Launch Your Own Blog

Of course I’m impartially to this option, but know that it takes a lot of work to run your own blog.

You must be a self-starter, motivated, and good at learning on your own.

This is a long-term plan, yet still with the possibility of making money right away (if you do it right).

Check out my post how to make $100-$500 monthly as a beginning blogger with affiliate marketing.

Or how to blog your life story.

Once you set up your blog to make money you will make it every month, BUT you just don’t know how much. It can be less than $50 one month or several hundred the next. The most successful bloggers and internet marketers who stick with it and learn how to overcome the challenges and truly dedicate themselves make several thousand a month, and the biggest…. more than $50,000 a month.

But you can start making several hundred soon.

It just won’t happen unless you learn how from the beginning to set it up to make money.

If you ignore how to set your blog strategically to make money FROM THE BEGINNING you will avoid wasting YEARS of NO MONEY. Trust me.

How do you avoid that…

…take a blogging course.

Here are the two I took. These include affiliate links that will earn me a commission (if you get the paid for versions), and of course, I’d love you for it, BUT you must decide what is right for you. However, without these courses, I would have given up on blogging a LONG time ago.

If it were me I’d start with the free version of Wealthy Affiliate and get the ProBlogger Secrets at the same time.

Wealthy Affiliate (FREE AFFILIATE BOOTCAMP Course to start to get you started)

The Free Bootcamp taught me a lot that has earned me thousands, but I am a self-starter. That’s all I needed. The monthly paid for version is more for someone who needs to be guided by the hand a bit. Plus with the paid version you have access to a community of fellow bloggers both novice and experienced to send AND receive messages. And you’ll gain access to a long list of courses to master your skills as a both a blogger and internet marketer.

**The page that you redirect to through my link above is not that pretty, BUT trust me I make money EVERY month from what they teach about writing money making reviews. I have even started charging coaching fees for what this FREE course taught me. Sign up, trust me. You DO NOT need to do the monthly membership unless you want lots of guidance.

Pro-Blogging Secrets

This is taught by a blogger Bob Lotich. I remember coming across his blog (formerly known as PFChristian.com, now SeedTime.com), who started a Christian-based blog that shared personal finance tips. Once I saw his FB ad that promoted his how-to-make money blogging course. I was sold. Best investment I ever made besides getting my real estate licence, well, and buying my vending machines.

This course BLEW up my traffic and taught me how to organize my writing to turn them into future products for sale, rather than just random posts that you cannot package and resell. There are three courses you can take separate, 1) one to learn how to set up a blog for beginners 2) advanced strategies to grow your blog and make money 3) how to grow traffic for free (this one changed my life).

But they are currently packaged together and range from $199 to $599, a one-time investment.

Here’s my recommendation, it’s simple. No matter if you are a beginner or intermediate, get the Community package. You need the traffic course that the Student package does NOT provide and you do NOT need the exclusive interviews that the Pro Package includes.

This is course will start getting you to earn money or get you started as a newbie to make money from the beginning.

Trust me… Don’t Take Years Trying to Figure It Out. Learn from Someone Who Has Done It.
